When my children were growing up I made sure they had every one of their vaccination’s and on time. We are lucky we have vaccinations. There is a cemetery not far from where we live and just about every tomb has a child’s date of birth 2 years of age and younger. If you are a frequent reader on my site then I’m sure you’ve seen me mention this fact before. It just breaks my heart to see so many infant plots. My first visit there made me realize just how horrible it was when an illness almost completely wiped out an entire generation before vaccinations were available. We need to encourage others to make sure they are getting their children vaccinated.

I want to make you aware of one vaccination that isn’t required by the CDC as of yet. Just the word Meningitis can made me shudder and scare me senseless. It should you as parents to be, parents, cousins, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents, whatever role you play or will play in the future of any child, as well. Meningitis comes on so suddenly and so aggressively that it can kill a previously healthy child within as little as 1 to 2 days of the first symptoms, which typically start out as non-specific and mimic symptoms of the flu. Anytime I hear of a child having flu like symptoms I feel like I can’t breathe and I worry myself to death over it. I’ve agreed to help make others aware of how terrible infant meningitis can be. “One out of 16 infants who contract the disease will not survive. Among survivors, one in five will suffer seizures, blindness, amputation, paralysis or learning disabilities.” Staggering statistics!

Meningitis Angels, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about meningitis and other vaccine-preventable diseases, is working to fight against meningococcal disease. I know you want to help prevent infant meningitis and you can. YOU CAN! It only takes a minute of your time but that minute can mean life or death to an infant. It could mean a life without seizures, blindness, amputation, paralysis or learning disabilities. This is important. It’s the most important thing I’ve ever posted on Terri’s Little Haven. I feel that strongly about this subject. I hope that you will go sign the petition as I did because right now the CDC is gathering information on this issue from the public. If everyone takes the time to sign the petition and share the information with everyone they know, and they all sign the petition, and their friends sign, it could mean the difference between making the important decision of whether to recommend that all infants receive this lifesaving vaccine.
